A laws icon above a person pointing to a money icon.

The Government can only agree to spend money when a law says we can.

An icon of the Act. Above is a services icon with a tick on it.

The Act included all the disability services in the community when it started.

A tick next to a services icon.
Below it is a cross next to two other services icons.

But now not all disability services are covered by the Act.

Two different law icons. Below is a tick next to two different services icons.

This means we need to use other laws to spend money on these services.

Employment and rehabilitation services

An icon of Disability Employment Services or D E S.

Disability Employment Services (DES) is a program that helps people with disability:

  • get ready to work
  • find a job
  • keep a job.

Employment means you:

  • have a job
  • go to work
  • get paid.

A person walking on crutches. They have an arrow pointing to a briefcase with a tick on it.

DES also helps people return to work:

  • after an injury
  • if a disability affected how they work.

We call this employment rehabilitation.

A rules icon next to a services icon with a money symbol on it.

There are a lot of rules about these services, including how:

  • governments pay for them
  • organisations manage them.

Two people agreeing about a document. Above is a grant icon.

For example, the Government must pay for DES with a grant.

A grant is money from the government for important work that helps others.

A grant icon with a cross on it. Above is a return to work icon.

But this rule doesn’t apply to employment rehabilitation services.

Questions for you to think about

An icon of the D E S with a line separating it from a return to work icon.

Should we keep these 2 services separate?

An icon of the D E S next to a return to work icon. There are lines running from both of them and combining into a single arrow.

Or should we combine them into one service?
