Why do we want to change the Act?

A calendar saying 30 years. There is a change icon with a cross in it.

The Act hasn’t changed much in over 30 years.

A government building. In front is a woman holding a change icon.

But the way the Government supports people with disability has changed.

Two people looking over a document. Above is an icon of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.

In 2008 we signed the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.

Some people call it the CRPD.

In this paper we call it the UN Convention.

An icon of two hands shaking above a globe.

The UN Convention is an agreement between different countries.

A group of people with their hands raised. Above is an equality symbol.

The UN Convention explains how people with disability should be treated fairly and equally.

We also made Australia’s Disability Strategy 2021–2031 (the Strategy).

A group of people with their hands raised. Above is an a support icon.

The Strategy is a plan to support people with disability in all areas of their life.

We want to make sure the new Act works well with:

  • the Strategy

A person giving a thumbs up next to an icon of the U N Convention.

  • the UN Convention.

An icon of a group of people in a park. Above is a services icon with a plus symbol.

The new Act should include disability services that the community uses now.

A thumbs up icon next to an ideas icon.

It should also work well with new ideas in the future about how to support people with disability.

In this paper we explain what:

An icon of the new act with a question mark above.

  • we could include in the new Act

A person pointing at you. They have a speech bubble with a question mark.

  • questions we have for you.

A person reading a document. They have a thought bubble with a thumbs down and a thumbs up.

We also explain how to tell us what you think.

Two people, one of them has their fist up in celebration. Above is a ticked box.

Together we can make sure the new Act does a good job at supporting people with disability to achieve their goals.
